FRIAS ON AWARDING MEDICAL MARIJUANA LICENSES BY LOTTERY

In an opinion column, entitled “Making money off marijuana” published this week in the Cranston Herald, Warwick Beacon and Johnston Sunrise, R.I. Republican National Committeeman Steven Frias expresses support for issuing the six new medical marijuana dispensary licenses through a lottery.

Here are some excerpts:

“When government awards lucrative licenses to only a limited number of businesses, the possibilities for controversy, favoritism, and even corruption are limitless.

Although some politicians may pass legislation with the intent of enriching those close to them, awarding medical marijuana licenses through a lottery would be a more transparent and fair approach to follow.

Awarding medical marijuana dispensary licenses through a lottery involving qualified applicants would mean that the winning applicants were chosen in public and at random rather than behind closed doors by politicians.”
